At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!

Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”

We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:

Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.

Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

Dental Crowns SmileHow dental crowns from your dentist in Clifton, NJ, can repair your smile

Damaged teeth can affect the way your smile looks, and the way your smile functions. Damaged teeth are embarrassing, and may keep you from smiling. Damaged teeth can also be painful, and may keep you from eating. The good news is, dental crowns can restore your damaged teeth and give you back your smile. Your dentist, Dr. Toan K. Bui, at Transcendental, LLC in Clifton, NJ, offers dental crowns to get you smiling again.

When you think of dental crowns, do you think of old, yellowed dental crowns that don’t match your tooth color? If so, it’s time to rethink dental crowns! Today’s dental crowns can be color-matched to blend with your teeth, creating a harmonious, beautiful smile.

Full porcelain crowns are extremely popular, and for good reason. Porcelain reflects light and looks just like tooth enamel. When you choose a porcelain crown, it will be virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth. Porcelain is also stain-resistant, which means your porcelain crown will stay bright and beautiful for years, even if you smoke or drink coffee.

Porcelain can also be fused to a metal framework. These crowns are known as PFM crowns and they combine the increased strength of metal with the beauty and natural look of porcelain. PFM crowns don’t have the light-reflective quality of full porcelain, so PFM crowns are a popular choice for posterior teeth.

Dental crowns restore your damaged teeth by covering the entire surface of your teeth above the gumline. When you bite down on a crown, the biting stress is spread evenly across your tooth surface, keeping your tooth from breaking.

In contrast, dental fillings aren’t as protective, and they can actually weaken your teeth by dividing your teeth into sections. Large metal fillings also don’t provide the cosmetic benefits of dental crowns.

If you need to restore your damaged teeth, you need to consider dental crowns. They are the go-to solution to repairing and restoring your smile. Cosmetic Dentistry SmileIf you look in the mirror and see a tired, worn, misaligned, or discolored smile, you may benefit from cosmetic dentistry. This facet of dentistry allows you to pick and choose how you want your smile to appear, alter your look, and give yourself the chance to feel great about the way you look. Find out more about cosmetic dentistry and what it can do for you with Dr. Toan Bui at Transcendental in Clifton, NJ.

What are some common cosmetic dentistry procedures?

  • Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is a popular solution for people with discolored or yellowed teeth. The treatment usually takes less than an hour and can lift the color of your teeth by up to ten shades.
  • Veneers: They are a porcelain dental restoration which your dentist attaches to the front surface of the tooth. Veneers are versatile, achieving anything from repairing a small chip to overhauling your entire smile for a totally new look.
  • Lumineers: While veneers require preparation of the teeth, Lumineers are a non-invasive option to change the appearance of your smile used in the same way as dental veneers.
  • Cosmetic Bonding and Contouring: Cosmetic bonding uses composite resin materials molded directly onto the surface of the tooth to change its appearance. Contouring goes hand-in-hand with bonding and is used to reshape the bonded tooth.

NewYearNewSmile

As December brings the old year to a close, it’s a great time to set goals for the year to come. This might include a major life change, such as a new job—or even a new romance! If one of these items is on your list for 2019, a smile makeover may be just the thing to help you get there.

Having a great smile can give your self-confidence a real boost. It can also affect how you are perceived by others. According to a survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of adults believe a smile is an important social asset and 96% believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. At the same time, three quarters of adults feel that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success.

If you aren’t pleased with your smile and want a new look, we can help you figure out which cosmetic dental treatments could be right for you. The answer might be something simple—like an overall brightening of the smile with professional teeth whitening, or fixing a small crack or chip in a single tooth with cosmetic tooth bonding. If you’re unhappy with worn-down or crooked teeth, dental veneers or orthodontic treatment might be the way to go. In fact, many adults find that orthodontic treatment with clear aligners is a great way to get a beautiful, straight smile without drawing attention to the fact that a makeover is in progress.

Of course, it’s not only important for your smile to look good but also for your whole mouth to stay healthy. So if you are experiencing any tooth pain, unusual mouth sores or gum problems, it’s time for you to come in for an exam. And if it’s been a while since you’ve had a dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning, why not make an appointment for early in the year? Don’t start the new year with last year’s dental problems!

5WaystoMakeYourSmileMoreConfidentandInviting

One of the most important aspects of social interaction is smiling, showing others we’re confident and outgoing.  Many people, though, are hesitant to use this important social skill because their teeth are unattractive.

But even the most unattractive teeth can be dramatically transformed through cosmetic dentistry. Here are 5 prominent ways we can restore beauty to your problem teeth.

Enamel shaping. Sometimes teeth can have an irregular shape that makes them stand out like a sore thumb. With this “sculpting” technique, we remove very small amounts of enamel, the outer protective layer of a tooth, which improves the tooth’s overall shape without harming it.

Bonding. Recent developments in acrylics now make it easier to repair chipped, broken or decayed teeth with minimal preparation. The acrylic material can be molded to resemble a natural tooth and colored to precisely match its shade and that of neighboring teeth. It’s then bonded to the tooth with a durability that can last through years of daily biting and chewing.

Veneers. These thin layers of dental porcelain are bonded to teeth to cover minor defects. Otherwise healthy teeth that are slightly chipped, stained or a bit out of alignment can get a more attractive “face” that’s durable and lasting.

Crowns and Bridgework. Sometimes teeth are too heavily decayed or lost altogether to use bonding or veneers. With porcelain dental restorations that have a strong inner core and an outer life-like appearance, we can completely cover an individual damaged tooth with a custom-made crown or replace one or more missing teeth with fixed bridgework.

Dental Implants. Introduced over thirty years ago, implants are a popular tooth replacement choice.  Its inner titanium post is surgically inserted into the jaw where bone cells grow and adhere to it to form a strong, lasting bond. Implants can be used for single teeth or as supports for fixed bridgework or removable dentures.

Regardless of your teeth’s appearance problems, cosmetic dentistry has a solution. The first step is a comprehensive examination — from there we can advise you on the best options for turning your embarrassing smile into a more beautiful and confident one.
