Dental bridges offer an effective way to replace missing teeth and make your smile whole again. Clifton, NJ, dentist Dr. Toan Bui shares some information about tooth loss.
Why is it important to replace a missing tooth?
If you've recently lost a tooth, living with the gap in your smile may seem like the simplest, least expensive option. Unfortunately, ignoring a missing tooth can cause further dental problems that can be quite costly. Although your teeth are held in place by roots and gum tissue, they will begin to drift if there's an opening in your smile. If there's a significant shift, your bite may be affected or you may have trouble removing plaque from areas of your teeth that overlap.
Bite problems can make eating difficult, lead to enamel erosion and increase your risk of gum disease. Braces are an excellent option for treating bite issues, but orthodontic treatment can be expensive. Replacing your missing tooth with a bridge will ensure that you won't have to worry about shifting teeth.
What are bridges?
Bridges are made up of a row of artificial teeth called crowns. Pontics, a type of crown that replaces missing teeth are located in the center of the bridge and are connected to abutments, crowns that help hold the bridge in place. Hollow abutments slip over teeth on either side of your gap and are cemented in place, ensuring that your bridge doesn't slip. Dental bridges may be made of porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic or resin.
Before you receive your bridge, the teeth that will be covered with abutments must be reduced in size in our Clifton office. Removing part of the teeth ensures a proper fit for the abutments. Once your bridge is in place, you'll care for it by brushing it to remove plaque. It's particularly important to floss under the bridge to prevent tooth decay in your abutment teeth. Special threaded flossers will help you reach this area.
